Qualification profile

Regular period of study two years (4 semesters of 30 CP each = 120 CP). Two independent "degree subjects" are studied, one of which is geography with 35 credits (minor) plus possibly the master's thesis with 45 credits (total 80 credits, major).

New guidelines and new study regulations were introduced for HS2021. These guidelines and study regulations also apply to all students who were already matriculated in the master's degree subjects in geography. All academic achievements completed up to that point will be transferred.

The HS2021 guidelines apply to all matriculated students, including those who began their studies before HS21. These guidelines were updated as of HS24:

Updated guidelines for the extra-faculty subject Geography in master's studies dated June 25, 2024 (in german only)

(old version of the guidelines dated May 25, 2021) (in german only)

valid from HS2021 for all students who do not graduate in FS2021. (in german only)

Here are a few tips to supplement the guidelines.

Master's thesis

Before you start your master's thesis, please make an appointment with the Earth Sciences Office.

Possible supervisors for the master's thesis can be found on the following list: Supervisors Master's thesis MA. Further information on possible Master's thesis topics can be found on the websites of the respective research groups.

Learning contract (agreement) master's thesis
A learning contract must be drawn up before starting the master's thesis. Please enter an end date that is realistic. If the date cannot be met, a written request for an extension must be submitted to the earth sciences program office with a justification, the new submission date and the signatures of the student and supervisor.

Master's thesis Formalities:
The declaration of scientific integrity must be included as the last page of the master's thesis.
Specimen copies: One bound copy goes to the library of the respective supervisor - further bound copies may go to the supervisor. With regard to the equipment, only a ring binding should be avoided. For further information see Guidelines.

Assessment forms Master's thesis
The assessment forms for the master's thesis must be submitted to the Earth Sciences degree program office together with the assessed learning contract and a copy of the title page. The master's thesis is often the last academic achievement to be completed. The documents must be submitted by the Thursday before the start of lectures at the latest so that further matriculation is no longer necessary - see provisions on matriculation requirements for coursework and examinations . Students must agree the submission deadline with their supervisor. The supervisor should carry out the assessment no later than 6 weeks after the submission of the thesis.

Master's examination

The Master's examination can be taken in all subject areas of the earth sciences. The only exception: If the Master's thesis is written in geography, the Master's examination may not be taken in the same subject area as the Master's thesis. However, if the master's thesis is written in the second degree subject, the choice of which subject area the examination is taken in is free.

List of possible examiners

The examination in geography can be taken independently of any Master's examination in the second subject in terms of time and administration. For further information on setting the examination date etc., see the guidelines and the website of the research groups: https: //duw.unibas.ch/de/forschungsgruppen/ . In addition, a personal application with signature must be submitted to the degree program office for earth sciences.

For subject headings regarding inspections, see the inspection information sheet

Conclusion

It is recommended that a module assignment is sent to the degree program office before the start of the lecture period of the last semester. In this way, it can be checked whether all the necessary courses have been completed or taken.
